  • EGEDA and LATC in collaboration with the Embassy of France in Brazil and Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival, with the co-sponsorship of the MEDIA Program of the European Commission, have joined to offer a technical and intensive training for Latin American producers in the aim of promoting working relationships and co-production opportunities between them and European producers. The seminar approaches issues such as: project development, international co-productions, financing resources in different countries, negotiation and contracting, producers' and distributors' rights of audiovisual contents, the appearance of new business models prompted by new technologies, and others. In addition to the two modules of direct participation the Seminar includes a third online module consisting of a two-month-long individualized tutoring provided by qualified European instructors. José Antonio Suárez is lecturer at the EGEDA-LATC Seminar providing his expertise on drafting and negotiating audiovisual contracts, especially those related to actors, directors, script-writers, musicians and composers, technicians and collective management rights.   • On 17th April, D. José Antonio Suárez head of our Intellectual Property team participated in a digital meeting organized by leading economic newspaper Expansión. The meeting counted on the participation of an important number of internet users that could solve their multiple doubts. The topic has awoken a big interest since recently a tax on tax on recordable digital media was approved in Spain.

  • On 23rd February, D. José Antonio Suárez head of the Suárez de la Dehesa–Iberian Desk Copyright and Entertainment team participated in a colloquium organized by economic newspaper La Gaceta de los Negocios and publishing company, El Derecho Editores. The theme of the discussion was situation of the private copying law and practice and the recently approved tax on recordable digital media. Other participants included D. Juan José López (President of 4th section of Audiencia Provincial of Madrid), D. José Manuel Tourné (General Manager of Federation for the Protection of Copyrights) and D. Víctor Domingo (President of Internet users Association). It was agreed by the speakers that Spain is in the list of countries with a major index of illegal downloads; a shameful social tolerance exists with the digital piracy and the Penal code must be changed.

  • On 8th March, 2009, the Court of Justice of The European Communities in Luxembourg has ratified Spain's TV quota for investment in local films. The ruling throws out an action brought by Spain's Uteca commercial TV union and supports the petitioning of an Association of Spanish Film Producers. In its rulings, the Court said the quotas did not constitute State aid in favour of the cinematographic industry.
